J. Walker (2020)   Where to Watch: Netflix   This enjoyable miniseries tells the tale of America’s first female self-made millionaire, Madam C.J. Walker (Octavia Spencer). She’s an OG hairpreneur, and she helped the hair industry to become a way for Black women to gain financial independence on their own terms. Despite the best efforts of bad husbands, bitter competitors, and a society just a generation past slavery that was rampant with misogynoir, Walker refused to give up on her dreams.   Why We Love It: Great cast. Spencer is magnificent as usual, Tiffany Haddish is a joy to watch as Walker’s daughter Lelia, Blair Underwood plays a no good husband so good, and Carmen Ejogo plays a great turn of the 20th Century mean girl. The soundtrack is surprisingly banging for a story set in the early 1900s. Granted, they’ve borrowed a more modern sound. but it works in the best way. Contrary to a popular misconception, Walker didn’t try to change the character of Black women’s hair. It was actually a “Magical Hair Grower” that launched Walker’s million-dollar hair career. Shortly before her death in 1919, the real-life Walker told a reporter, “Right here, let me correct the erroneous impression held by some that I claim to straighten hair. I deplore such an impression because I have always held myself out as a hair culturist. I grow hair.”   Nappily Ever After (2018)   Where to Watch: Netflix   A romantic comedy where the true love story has our heroine falling in love with her natural hair. Gorgeous ad exec Violet Jones (Sanaa Lathan) is the perfect woman… a little too perfect. As we follow her journey from straight to blonde to bald to natural, we cheer Violet on as she shakes things up and gets what she really wants. Which is not necessarily the guy. A true feel-good movie.   Why We Love It: It’s an empowering and non-judgmental message for women rocking whatever style they want- just so long as they know their natural hair is beautiful. This movie is a brilliant illustration of how our attitudes toward natural hair impact the next generation. Eye candy: fashion & hotties galore. Oh, this one will cheer you up no matter how bad your day was.   Woah Scared GIFfrom Woah GIFs Hair Love (2019)   Where to Watch: YouTube   Who knew you could laugh and cry and feel warm and fuzzy this much in less than 7 minutes? This Oscar-winning animated short film is well worth the watch- over and over again. Hair Love follows a young girl’s attempts to emulate her mother’s natural hairstyles- and her dad’s struggle to help her.   Why We Love It: One of the purest love stories ever. The animation is fabulous and adorable. Issa Rae voices the mom.   Hair Tales (2022)   Where to Watch: Hulu   In conversation with Tracee Ellis Ross, beloved Black female celebrities share their life stories through their hairstyles. This intimate and inspiring series counts Ross and Oprah Winfrey among its executive producers. Guests span generations from Marsai Martin to Issa Rae to Ayanna Pressley and Winfrey.   Why We Love It: Our favorites get real about what their natural hair journey was really like. It’s truly inspiring. We see how each woman’s embrace of her crown lights her up as she makes her unique mark on her chosen industry.   Good Hair (2009)   Where to Watch: Amazon Prime   The harmful messaging that Black hair isn’t “good hair” starts young. When Chris Rock’s toddler asks him why she doesn’t have “good hair” he is prompted to take a deep dive into the state of Black hair. From barbershops to hair shows, the weave industry, to the economics behind relaxers and the health effects of perms, Rock takes us on a wild and informative ride. One thing is for sure: when it comes to Black hair, it’s never “just” a hairstyle. There is a wholllleee lot of context.   Why We Love It: Chris Rock. That infamous soda can in relaxer scene is… eye-opening. Who profits from Black hair not being considered “good hair”? Rock raises this question economically, emotionally, health-wise, and in terms of professionalism and social capital. By the time Tracie Thoms says, “Natural hair is freedom” - you feel that. Maya Angelou, Nia Long, Eve, and other greats share their perspectives in interview clips.   PICK (2021)   Where to Watch It: buy it on iTunes   This beautiful and heartbreaking short film won a whole slew of awards- and it’s easy to see why. Alliyah (Hazel Downey) had plans for her picture day hairstyle that didn’t work out. Showing up to her predominantly white school with her full, luscious afro seems to bring out the worst in many people around her. PICK is gorgeously shot and the teenage star packs quite an emotional punch into a mostly silent performance.   Why We Love It: The cinematography is breathtaking, percussive, and unique. That glorious afro is always center stage. So many layers to this story. You could watch it over and over again (I did) and pick up on new things every time. Oh, the contrast. The hairstyles of the white classmates that are accepted without comment (even a blonde with braids and beads) really show the disparate weight and significance society puts on even children’s hair.   Bad Hair (2020)   Where to Watch: Hulu   Justin Simien, the writer & director of Dear White People, takes an all-star cast back to the 80s for this horror comedy about bloodthirsty weaves. When Zora (Vanessa Williams) takes over the production company she works at, Anna Bludso (Elle Lorraine), an aspiring music TV host, quickly learns that with her natural hair, she’ll never get promoted despite all her talent and good ideas. So she goes and gets a weave installed… but at what cost?   Why We Love It: Lena Waithe, Laverne Cox, Kelly Rowland, Usher, and James Van Der Beek are in it. The goriest scenes in this movie are a chemical burn from a relaxer and a weave being sewn in… So, it’s not the demon hair monster that makes you cringe in fear, but something that countless Black women have been told they must do to advance professionally. Says a lot, doesn’t it? After that painful weave installation, Anna is told over and over again that she is beautiful. She gets promoted. Her trifling ex looks her way again. Society often puts blame on women of color for going to extremes to change the texture of their hair… but in real, material ways, punishes them when they don’t. And rewards them when they do. It’s the system that’s killer- and, in the movie, everyone who tries to assimilate gets devoured and becomes killer themselves.   Black Panther (2018)   Where to Watch: rent or buy on Amazon Prime or iTunes   Everyone had Wakanda fever when the first Black Panther movie came out. We fell in love with the powerful characters in this action-packed superhero story… and their hair. “We did a totally Afrocentric, natural hair movie,” Camille Friend, head of the Black Panther hair department told the New York Times. “There was not a pressing comb or relaxer on set. That wasn’t happening. We’re in a moment when people are feeling empowered about being Black. And that’s one thing you see when you watch ‘Black Panther.’ The hair helps communicate that.”   Why We Love It: Black Superhero Excellence. Absolutely phenomenal cast: Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong'o, Letitia Wright, Michael B. Jordon, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett… the list goes on. We want to live in Wakanda: the gorgeous, wealthy, technologically advanced homeland in the movie.   Black-ish Season 6 Episode 11: Hair Day (2019)   Where to Watch: Hulu   Diane (Marsai Martin) grapples with whether to relax or not to relax and everyone has an opinion. Luckily, she has her mom (Tracee Ellis Ross) to support her. “There is no such thing as the wrong choice,” Bo tells Diane. “And despite what the world tells us, all Black hair is beautiful.”   Why We Love It: Jill Scott plays Diane’s hairstylist! The fabulous musical numbers. Is there anything Marsai Martin can’t do? The humorous salon depiction. Bo and Diane show up 35 minutes after their scheduled appointment and are told they are “early.” Everyone weighing in on your style. Your stylist as your therapist.   Hair Power: Me and My Afro (2020)   Where to Watch: BET+   Through a series of interviews, this documentary covers the historical and cultural significance of Black natural hairstyles in the UK. “We lost so much documentation and we lost so much history through slavery and colonialism. There are archives where we don’t exist,” says Shahira, a junior content editor and one of the interview subjects in the documentary. “...A lot of our ancestors weren’t even recorded as born. So, our hair is our history. It’s part of who we are. I feel like we can in a way go back and remember our ancestors in a beautiful way.”   Why We Love It: Emma Dabiri, a writer & historian, does an extraordinary job of contextualizing the many interviews in Black hair politics and history. Hair Shedding: When Is It a Problem?

How to Have a No-Shed-Vember Are you freaked out by the hair stuck in your comb or caught in the drain after wash day? Don’t worry, hair shedding is a normal part of the hair growth cycle. Keep reading to find out: How much hair shedding is normal How to track how much shedding is normal for you What to do if your hair is actually thinning Habits that will prevent excess shedding Everybody Sheds “Is hair shedding normal? Yes. Very normal,” says Vigor Roots CEO Nathalee DuRose. “In fact, it is customary to shed 50-100 strands per day.” Shedding is a normal part of the hair growth cycle. Here’s a quick overview of how it works. For folks with healthy hair, about 90% of the strands on your head are in the growing or anagen stage at any given time. After roughly 3-5 years, the hair separates from the bottom of the follicle over the short catagen phase before entering the telogen stage, in which the hair stops growing and rests until it is pushed out by a new hair. Normally, 10-15% of your strands are in the resting stage at any given time. Since the vast majority of your hair is in a growing stage, you can afford to lose the normal 50-100 strands a day without anyone noticing. There is enough hair left and enough new hair coming in for your hair to maintain its normal thickness. How Much Hair Shedding is Normal? So, those stray hairs in your comb and shower are most likely nothing to worry about. Especially if you have long hair- those shedded clumps are going to look more dramatic because there is a lot to each strand! Also, if you’re not washing your hair each day, you’ll probably see bigger clumps in the drain because the strands of previous days hadn’t been loosened enough to fall out until you washed your hair. (Caution: washing your hair every day will dry out your scalp, so we don’t recommend it.) And, FYI, women typically shed more hair per day than men. It’s estimated that 40% of women experience excessive shedding during styling. DuRose says you should consider how your hairstyle is affecting your shedding. On the Vigor Roots Instagram, DuRose shared the vast difference between how much she shed after wearing braids for 4 weeks vs. the much smaller amount shed when she wore her hair natural. In any case, it’s important to get a sense of what’s a normal amount of hair loss for you, since excess shedding is something to pay attention to. Why Hair Shedding ≠ Hair Loss There is actually a difference between hair shedding and hair loss. As we’ve already covered, some hair shedding is normal. Excess shedding happens with a common condition called telogen effluvium. This excess shedding often occurs abruptly, around three months after an intense physiological disruption like surgery, childbirth, medication, or grief & stress over the loss of a loved one. Luckily, the condition is temporary and your hair is likely to grow back. Hair loss occurs when you are unable to grow new, healthy hair. There are different types of hair loss that require different types of treatment. So, if your hairline is thinning or you’re noticing bald patches, go get checked out by a dermatologist so you know what you’re dealing with and how to address it. Some triggers for excessive hair shedding or telogen effluvium: Surgery Childbirth Hormonal fluctuations Medications such as antidepressants and oral cotraceptives A stressful event like a death, divorce, car crash, or job loss Chronic illness High-fever Lack of nutrition Drastic weight loss Here are some common causes of hair loss and the inability to grow new healthy hair: Hereditary hair loss Autoimmune disease Chemotherapy or radiation to the head Leaving a protective style in too long Wearing too many tight buns, ponytails, or other tension styles Damaging the scalp with improperly applied bleach, dye, or chemical relaxer If you’re experiencing hair loss, don’t lose hope. Many types of hair loss are treatable- but the treatments vary depending on the cause. A dermatologist can determine why you’re losing your hair and recommend appropriate next steps. Hair Habits To Prevent Excess Shedding & Promote Healthy Hair Growth You know what they say: prevention is better than a cure! Making it habit to take good care of your hair will help ward off unwanted thinning. Here’s how to maintain good hair and scalp health. 7 Signs You Should See a Doctor About Your Dry Scalp & Hair Loss

Dry scalp is a common complaint, and many cases can be easily treated with proper scalp care, natural remedies, and over-the-counter medications. But, sometimes a dry scalp is a symptom of a more serious problem that needs to be treated by a doctor before it leads to permanent hair loss. Here are 7 scenarios in which you should definitely book an appointment with a doctor, preferably a dermatologist- a doctor who specializes in conditions of the skin, hair, and nails. #1: You Have Excessive Itching Itchy scalps are common, but not to be ignored. The truth is, your scalp should be comfortable! So whenever your scalp is persistently itchy, it’s time to start paying attention. “Your scalp should not be itching you extensively,” says Vigor Roots Founder Nathalee DuRose. “It’s OK to have a random itch, but if you realize that within a day you’re scratching your head 10 times or itching for minutes at a time- you should see a doctor.” Persistently itchy scalps can be a symptom of a variety of conditions that require treatment like dandruff, ringworm, or lichen planus. Further, scratching can irritate and tear the sensitive skin of the scalp- which can lead to infection. So, if you’ve got an itchy scalp- step one is to make sure you have a healthy scalp care routine that includes: Regular washing & moisturizing Gentle hair care products & tools Styling that doesn’t place excessive tension on the scalp, use harsh chemicals, or heat styling tools If the itch persists despite a gentle scalp care routine, it’s time to get it checked out by a doctor. #2: Stubborn Rashes, Bumps, Flaking, or Scarring Healthy scalps feel smooth, moisturized, and comfortable. Flaking, pimples, bumps, and rashes are all signs of an unhappy scalp. That’s why regularly running your fingers over your scalp to check for any changes in the texture is an important part of scalp health. DuRose recommends doing at least a monthly self scalp examination so that you can catch on to any potential issues early enough to treat them. “When I hear people discussing their scalp conditions, it is sometimes apparent that they have spent months, probably years, missing subtle signs, symptoms, and preventable causes,” she says. “These could have been resolved with a slight change in routine, or the application of a scalp serum to treat an infection unintentionally left untreated.” Should you come across a bump or rough patch, DuRose recommends looking at it with a mirror or using your phone to photograph it. Make sure the area is washed and moisturized with gentle products that don’t contain irritants. It’s especially important to get your scalp taken care of if you’re planning on bleaching, dying, relaxing, or perming your hair or if you’re going to have a tension style put in. These hairstyles are likely to strain even a healthy scalp, so if your stylist has concerns, pump the breaks. When your scalp is in poor condition, moving forward with this sort of styling is a recipe for hair loss. Moral of the story: follow your stylist's advice for scalp care- whether it’s a deep moisturizing treatment or an appointment with a dermatologist. #4: You’ve Tried a Treatment for 6 Months & It Hasn’t Worked Perhaps you’ve followed your stylist’s recommendations and/or have been trying all the natural remedies and all the over-the-counter treatments- but your scalp is still uncomfortable and your hair hasn’t returned to full thickness. DuRose says that if you’ve fully committed to scalp care for 6 months and still haven’t seen an improvement, it’s time to talk to a doctor. #5: You’re Considering a Hair Transplant Before you spend thousands on a hair transplant surgery that your insurance won’t cover, head to the dermatologist to see if less drastic and expensive treatments can get you the results you want. Not everyone is a suitable candidate for a hair transplant surgery, and hair transplant surgeries are not guaranteed to work. Improper hair transplants can actually wind up damaging hair follicles that could have been healed enough for new hair growth with the help of a dermatologist and proper scalp care. Several disappointed hair transplant patients are DMing DuRose for scalp advice as we speak, dismayed that the procedure didn’t result in restored, healthy hair. It’s true that proper scalp care will not be a quick fix for hair thinning- DuRose says to give it 6-12 months to fully take effect. But, proper scalp care is much gentler and less expensive than heading right for the hair transplant surgeon. Think of it, instead of running up a $4,000+ surgery bill, your dermatologist may just suggest you change up your diet and avoid certain ingredients in your hair care products. If you do decide to move forward with a hair transplant, no judgment. But do make sure to check with your dermatologist first about whether or not you’re a good candidate. Then do your research and only use a specialized hair transplant surgeon with a track record of getting people good results. #6: You Have Hair Loss and an Autoimmune Disease Certain autoimmune diseases like lupus, Hashimoto’s disease, psoriasis, and more can result in hair loss. If you have an autoimmune disease and are experiencing an uncomfortable scalp and/or hair thinning, it’s important to discuss remedies with a dermatologist- as the most effective treatments are likely specific to your condition rather than something you can easily find with a Google search. In some cases, folks with autoimmune diseases are not able to regrow healthy hair- but they can certainly still care for their scalp and rock bald is beautiful or hairless & handsome. #7: You’re Taking a Medication That Counters Hair Growth Hair loss can be a side effect for many common types of medications from birth control, to thyroid medications, to antibiotics, and mood stabilizers. Check if your medications have hair loss as a possible side effect. If so, talk to your doctor about how to address it. It’s Not Too Late for Scalp Health If you’re having trouble with your scalp and hair loss, please know you’re not alone. “There is so much shame- so much pressure to look and feel good about your hair. Once people do not measure up to that standard, they are depressed and disengaged from social lifestyles, “ DuRose explains. Regardless of your ability to grow hair, you deserve a healthy, comfortable scalp and peace of mind.
